Earth Day 2022 was a huge success

Earth Day Grey Bruce 2022 was a resounding success. It turned out to be a beautiful day and over 600 people turned out to help us celebrate the beauty of the Earth and learn about what they can do to reduce climate change.

The event started with a Water Ceremony led by Shirley John near the mouth of the Sydenham River. About one hundred people joined Shirley to honour the life-giving waters.

Following the ceremony, a Climate Fair opened at the Farmers’ market site. There were 35 booths focused on raising awareness of the issues around climate change. Some demonstrated actions that are being taken by community groups while others gave examples of individual climate actions and alternatives.

There was also a children’s wildlife parade with a wonderful assortment of costumes, paper maché masks and animals, and music. The parade was led by a stilt walker and the Durham Sauntering Band. Performances at the Fair included groups from the Owen Sound Dance Academy, OSing, and the Saugeen Sound Conspiracy among others.

Finally, to close the event, local performers, Coco Love Alcorn and Drew McIvor gave a concert celebrating the Earth.
