Owen Sound Repair Café

Georgian Bluffs Climate Action Team (GBCAT) is proud to announce the creation of the Owen Sound Repair Café program. Repair Cafés are held at the Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library on the second Saturday of each month, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

The Repair Café embodies GBCAT’s overarching goals of fostering community engagement and effecting meaningful change, one repair at a time. It’s more than just fixing items; it’s about bringing community together, nurturing a culture of sustainability and empowering individuals to become stewards of our planet. It is a vibrant initiative born out of collaborative effort of the visionary leadership team of eight enthusiastic GBCAT members, Ann Schneider, Danielle Edwards, Danuta Valleau, Fiona Dightam, Janet Pawsey, Jenny Carver, Shelia Brown-SanCartier, and Valerie Kurck, and epitomizes the spirit of grassroots environmental action.

GBCAT’s culture revolves around fostering community engagement in a diverse array of climate-conscious endeavors. Owen Sound, with its wide-reaching appeal and accessibility, is the perfect locale to attract both skilled “fixers” and individuals seeking to mend their items, thereby fostering a practice of resourcefulness and sustainability.

The Owen Sound Repair Café team were inspired by the Thornbury Repair Café and affirmed by shared values with Repair Café International. From the initial brainstorming session in October 2023 to the grand opening on March 9th 2024, the core team exhibited exemplary dedication, working tirelessly to navigate the logistical intricacies. They meticulously curated a collection of essential tools donated by community members, outlined repair protocols, and orchestrated effective communication strategies to ensure a seamless launch. An Orientation Session held on February 24, 2024, served as a rallying point for volunteers and fixers alike with its infectious enthusiasm.

The Repair Café stands as a testament to the power of transforming ideas into actionable initiatives, symbolizing community-driven climate action at its finest.
