Apr 20, 2024
time: 11:00 am – 4:00 pm
Owen Sound, 1st Avenue West between 8th and 9th Street.
The Earth Day Planning Group invites everyone, of all ages and identities, as well as organizations and community groups from across our region to join us. We acknowledge that we live in the traditional territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation and welcome the participation of Indigenous people and groups in the event.
Our Goal is to champion a celebratory Earth Day event that engages and energizes us all to take concrete steps towards climate action, including mitigation, adaptation, and social justice. Our hope for 2024 is to promote real climate action and solutions towards protecting our planet for generations to come. Therefore, we challenge all of us to commit to positive action.
This year’s Earth Day will follow the overall spirit of the past two amazing and hugely successful Earth Days, however with new opportunities for engagement on issues of climate change / action and environmental issues.
The day starts with a Water Ceremony with Saugeen Elder Shirley John, Strong White Buffalo Woman at the River. The Bandshell will be Mainstage with ongoing performances by local musicians and poets, and announcements. The Public Library Auditorium will showcase student climate projects, the Georgian Bluffs Repair Café, and there will be a dance and a theatrical performance on environmental stories. Upstairs the library will have books on the environment displayed. The TOM Art Gallery will have “Upcycle TOM” a collaborative art project between The TOM, Owen Sound Waste Watchers and Keppel Sarawak School. The Earth Fair will be at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Gym. There will be booths offering information and resources on greener living, alternative housing, gardening, regenerative farming, accessing nature, alternative transportation, tree planting projects, and various initiatives for climate action. There also will be children’s areas with activities offered by local groups. The Parade will again be a highlight of the day starting at the Bandshell leading along the river to City Hall and back, led by the Saugeen Sauntering Band.
